Health Care Benefit Relief for Small Businesses

With all the commotion resulting from the ongoing health debate and court battles to challenge the constitutionality of the recently approved health law, who wonder if a solution to the widespread problem of rising health care costs will never be reached. However, more than 55 years, a little-known solution to this problem, hidden deep among many sections of the Internal Revenue Code, has apparently remained dormant - the Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA).

In 1954, the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) was amended to include, inter alia, health agreements with tax deductible and tax-free refund. Under an HRA, a company may provide reimbursement for medical and dental expenses incurred by or on behalf of their employees and their dependents for the HRA plan year. The important features of an HRA include:

"Under the reimbursement plan are not subject to social security, mesothelioma solicitors , Medicare, unemployment taxes, or withholding of income tax

"An HRA does not have to be pre-financing

"Reimbursement is a benefit included as part of a worker's total compensation

The employer may specify that medical and dental expenses are reimbursable

"Any amount not used during the year can be extended in the coming years, so none of the benefits lost by the employee

In effect, this becomes an excellent alternative to conventional insurance coverage and even group insurance plans, especially if the company has an operating budget of small and has employees who have no health problem important.

For example, health insurance coverage for a family of four could cost more than $ 4800/year plus co-payments, lab fees, and any payment to any deductible required.

Alternatively, a company can have an annual reimbursement tax deductible and tax-free $ 1,200 - $ 3,000 (or any reasonable amount) as part of an HRA for each employee, which would be part tax deductible and tax-free of their total compensation, and any unused portion may be carried forward in the coming years.
