A native Californian, John was admitted to the California State Bar and the U.S. District Court, Northern  District of California, on June 24, 1976 and to the Alaska State Bar in 1983. He was admitted to the U. S. District Court, Central District of California, in 1977, the U.S. District Court, Eastern District in 1997, and the U.S. District Court, Southern District in 1998. He received his B.A. degree in Government in 1970, and his J.D. degree in 1975, from the University of San Francisco. At law school he received the Bancroft-Whitney American Jurisprudence Award for Corporation Law. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the California Bar Association, the Alaska Bar Association, and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. John has received an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell, and practices in the areas of Business, Corporate, Healthcare, Employment and Real Estate law; in both transactional and litigation matters. He has represented individuals and companies in traditional business and contract disputes, including shareholder and partnership disputes, employment and wrongful termination, mergers and acquisitions and real estate litigation. He has also represented companies and individuals in negotiating and securing complex financial transactions, including the lease and purchase of equipment, and other financing and sales agreements. He has documented and provided legal advice to individuals, medical corporations, and medical groups, in general business, healthcare, employment, and financial matters, including the choice of legal entity, joint venture and partnership agreements, hospital and radiology group contracts, purchase and sale of businesses, and commercial and residential real estate transactions.

He has completed American Arbitration Association - 40 hours Mediator Skills Training (2003); Center for Dispute Resolution, Advanced Business and Commercial Mediation Training (2007). He also acts as a Mediator for the Los Angeles County Superior Court Mediation Program since 2004.
